Abstract

Pesantren is an Islamic educational institution that has a style typical of Indonesia (indigenous). In other Islamic countries there is no institution that has the characteristics and traditions just like boarding school, although there may be a particular institution insome other countries are considered to have similarities with the boarding schools, such as ribâth, insistence dâkhilî, or Jam `iyya. But the feature of pesantren in Indonesia distinctly unique, because it is closely linked with the history and process of the spread of Islam in Indonesia. Indigenous education is what makes the world of boarding schools still exist and brave in the midst of the siege of cultural modernity is increasingly growing.

The dynamics of the journey can not be separated from the minor assumption, assessment, stigma and labeling, especially in matters of traditionality. But it was still notable to break down historical roots so strongly embedded in local culture of this level. Pesantren since long survival in the history of education in Indonesia. Pesantren attached to the "status" as a traditional educational institution puritanical, extreme and radical. Pesantren unfairly discredited as a place of preservation of the teachings of Islam an intolerant and non-cooperative. Pesantren claimed to be a base camp where producing cadres of militant terrorists with its main enemy of the United States and its accomplices. On the other hand, plurality, multicultural considered a “product of discourse” which accidentally transmitted effectively, massive and intensive, through various channels of information technology by the West. Therefore this paper will explore further how the actual strategic role of school, especially in responding to contemporary realities of a pluralistic and multicultural it.
